Why This Summer Matters
The jump from second to third grade is one of the biggest transitions in elementary school. Third grade introduces multiplication tables, division, longer reading passages, and writing summaries.
Children who use this packet regularly throughout the summer arrive in September as some of the most prepared students in their class.
SECTION 1 — READING COMPREHENSION
The Curious Squirrel
A small squirrel named Nutkin lived in the forest. He was curious about everything. Every morning when he woke up, the first thing he did was look at the sky.
One autumn day, Nutkin faced a big problem. Winter was coming soon, but he hadn't gathered enough food yet.
"If I work a little each day, I'll finish before winter arrives," he told himself.
And that's exactly what he did. Every morning he woke up early. He collected acorns, walnuts, and hazelnuts. He stored them all in safe places.
When winter came, Nutkin slept warm and comfortable. He thought to himself, "Panicking doesn't help, but planning does."

My child gets confused with regrouping in math. Use concrete materials. Make bundles of tens and ones using blocks or sticks.
