Nar the Ant and the Storm

The sky turned dark. Nar felt the storm coming. Ants sense these things from the air—vibrations travel through the ground, the wind shifts, and moisture rises. The storm was big. Really big. “To the nest!” Nar called out. “Everyone to the nest!” The ants ran. Nar stayed behind, counting and making sure everyone got through safely. Ten. Twenty. Forty. They all made it. Then she stopped. One Was Missing Nar counted again. Forty-nine. There should have been fifty. She stepped outside. The sky was getting darker. Trees were starting to sway. In the distance, she saw something small, curled up, and trembling. A bug. Not an ant. A tiny ladybug. It had wings but couldn't fly—it had landed on a wet leaf and its wing was stuck. The Choice Nar stopped. She needed to get back to the nest. The storm was coming. But the ladybug was out there. Stuck. Alone. “If I go back for you, we both might be in danger,” Nar thought. Then she thought: "But if I don't go back, you'll definitely be in danger.“ She ran. Moving Fast She reached the ladybug. The leaf was wet. Nar used her strong jaws—ants have powerful mandibles. She gripped the leaf and pulled. The wing came free. ”Go!“ said Nar. The ladybug looked at her. ”Thank you.“ ”Thank me later! Go!“ The ladybug flew away. Nar ran. The Storm The first raindrops fell just as Nar entered the nest. She was breathing hard. The colony looked at her. ”Where were you?“ asked the colony leader. ”Outside.“ ”Why?“ ”I didn't want to leave someone behind.“ The leader stared at her. ”Was it one of our ants?“ ”No.“ ”Then why did you risk everything?“ Nar thought for a moment. ”Because they were in danger.
