Çinar saw his grandfather on the balcony every single morning.

Binoculars in hand. Eyes fixed in one direction. Completely still.

Sometimes for five minutes. Sometimes for half an hour.

What was he looking at?

Çinar wanted to ask. Every morning, he wanted to ask. But his grandfather was a quiet man. When he didn't want to talk, everyone could tell.

One morning, Çinar opened the balcony door. He sat down beside his grandfather without a word.

Waiting Without Asking

Grandpa glanced over. He said nothing.

Çinar said nothing either.

They sat together.

Grandpa kept looking through the binoculars.

Çinar waited.

Ten minutes passed.

Then Grandpa lowered the binoculars.

“You watched well,” Grandpa said.

“What do you mean?”

“You waited without asking. Just like me.”

What Was He Watching?

“What do you look at every morning?” Çinar finally asked.

Grandpa handed him the binoculars.

“Look straight ahead.”

Çinar looked.

On the roof of the building across the way — a large nest. And inside it... four tiny heads. Stretching upward, beaks wide open.

“Baby birds,” Çinar whispered.

“I watch them every day,” Grandpa said. “For weeks now.”

“How did you discover them?”

“By accident. I saw them from the window one morning. After that, I came back every day.”

Growing Up

Weeks went by.

Çinar started waking up early too, joining his grandfather on the balcony.

The baby birds grew. Their feathers came in. Their wings developed.

One morning, Grandpa lowered the binoculars. "They'll fly today."

“How do you know?”

"From the way they look. They're not looking inside the nest anymore. They're looking out."

That afternoon, the first one flew away. Then the second. The third. The fourth.

The nest was empty.

What Grandpa Said

Çinar stared at the empty nest. "It's over now."

Grandpa put the binoculars in his bag.

“Everything ends someday. What matters is that you saw it.”

“Why does seeing matter so much?”

Grandpa looked at his grandson.

“When you see the beginning, the middle, and the end of something — you truly understand it. When you understand, you miss it. When you miss something, you learn to value it. And valuing things is where everything begins.”

Çinar told his mother. His mother told his father.

Grandpa with the binoculars didn't say much. But one morning, he had said so very much.
