It was raining outside.
Selenga pressed her nose against the window. Everything looked gray, wet, and cold.
"I'm bored," she sighed.
Her mom walked by. "Why don't you read a book?"
"Don't want to."
“How about drawing?”
"Don't feel like it."
"Well then, I guess you'll just have to be bored."
Selenga groaned and looked back out the window.
Raindrops were sliding down the glass, each one moving at its own speed. She watched them carefully, getting closer to the pane.
Two drops were racing side by side. Which one would reach the bottom first?
The Race Begins
“Come on!” Selenga cheered, leaning toward the left side of the window.
The left raindrop picked up speed.
“Go, go, go!”
The left drop merged with another one, grew bigger, moved faster, and won!
“YES!” Selenga pumped her fist in the air.
Her mom peeked in. "What's all the excitement?"
"I'm having a race."
Mom smiled. "Who's winning?"
“The left one. But Mom says I should give the right one a chance too.”
The Tournament
Selenga grabbed some paper and a pencil.
She gave the raindrops names:
Left 1: Speedy Left 2: Big Right 1: Steady Right 2: Lucky
The tournament began.
Speedy versus Steady. Speedy shot ahead at first, then slowed down. Steady passed it and won.
Big versus Lucky. Big got heavier as it grew larger. Lucky slipped right past it. “Go, Lucky!” Selenga cheered.
The Final: Steady versus Lucky.
They traveled side by side. The window rattled slightly in the breeze. Steady stayed its course. Lucky went straight down.
Lucky won the championship!
Selenga wrote in her notebook: “Tournament Champion: Lucky.”
Talking to the Rain
By evening, the rain had slowed to a drizzle.
Selenga cracked open the window and held out her hand. Raindrops fell onto her palm.
“Thank you,” she whispered to the rain.
The rain didn't answer, but it seemed to slow down even more, as if listening.
“I was upset about being bored. But spending time with you was really fun.”
A single drop landed on her nose.
Selenga laughed.
