Selenga arrived at the village.

She was visiting her grandmother with her mom. The village was small, with just a few houses scattered about. The air smelled sweetly of hay.

In the garden stood a large cow with black and white patches. Her eyes were enormous, and her eyelashes were wonderfully long.

“Mom, this cow is looking at us,” said Selenga.

"That's Buttercup,“ her mother replied. ”Your grandmother's cow."

Meeting Buttercup

Selenga walked slowly closer.

“Hello, Buttercup.”

Buttercup said, “Moo.”

"I'm Selenga. I'm here on vacation."

Buttercup mooed again.

"Don't you speak English?" Selenga giggled.

Buttercup shook her head.

Selenga laughed. "That's okay. You say moo, I say Selenga. We understand each other."

The Farm Tour

The next morning, Buttercup was waiting in the garden. When Selenga came out, the cow began walking. Selenga followed along.

Buttercup led her to the barn first. Inside were hay piles, little calves, and buckets of feed.

“This is your home,” said Selenga. "It's so warm."

Then Buttercup took her to the pasture—wide, green, and endless.

“This must be your dining room,” laughed Selenga.

Buttercup munched on grass while Selenga watched.

“You eat so much,” said Selenga.

Buttercup mooed.

"You're right. You're a big girl."

The Milk Journey

That evening, Selenga's grandmother milked Buttercup. White milk flowed into a bucket.

“Where does this come from?” asked Selenga.

“From Buttercup,” her grandmother answered.

“How does she do that?”

“Buttercup eats grass. The grass becomes milk. The milk comes to us.”

Selenga looked at Buttercup. “So you work every single day.”

Buttercup mooed.

“Thank you, Buttercup. I drink milk every morning, but I never thought about where it came from.”

Grandmother made yogurt from the milk. Then she made cheese from the yogurt. Selenga watched every step.

“One cow does all this,” she said in amazement.

"That's how nature works,“ said her grandmother. ”One thing becomes another. Nothing is wasted."

Saying Goodbye

The vacation ended. Selenga packed her suitcase.

Buttercup was waiting in the garden.

Selenga ran over and hugged her neck. "I'll come back. I promise."

Buttercup let out a long, deep moo.

"I'll miss you too," said Selenga.

When the car drove away, Selenga looked back. Buttercup was still watching.

Selenga waved.

Buttercup nodded her head.

Questions Parents Ask

**Are cows really this intelligent?** Cows are social animals and can recognize individual people. Research shows that cows form genuine friendships with each other and with humans.

**How does milk turn into cheese?** Cultures and enzymes are added to milk, which is then gently heated. After sitting for a specific time, the liquid separates from the solids, and what remains becomes cheese.
