The car pulled onto the road.

The hotel was behind them. The beach was behind them. The ocean was behind them.

Selenga looked back.

She could still see the ocean. Blue. Getting smaller. Smaller still. Gone.

On the Road

Selenga turned forward again.

The road was long. Trees appeared. Cities. Villages.

In her backpack, she had hidden a small blue bead in her hand.

She pulled it out. Held it tight.

She held it up to the light. Tiny bubbles inside.

“Still ocean-colored,” she whispered.

Two Feelings at Once

“Mom?”

“Hmm?”

"I'm sad and happy at the same time. Is that normal?"

“Why are you sad?”

“I left the ocean. I left Mia. I left the hotel room.”

“Why are you happy?”

"We're going home. I have my own bed. My cat. My neighborhood."

“So both feelings can happen together.”

“They can?”

"Yes. People call that nostalgia. It's the sweet sadness of leaving something beautiful behind."

Selenga thought about this. "Nostalgia hurts, but it's nice."

“It is.”

Dad's Hand

Selenga reached over. She took her dad's hand.

Dad looked at her. He smiled. He didn't let go.

Selenga leaned against him. She closed her eyes.

She thought about the ocean. The waves. How the sand felt under her feet. The salty water. Mia. The seagulls. The sunset.

She held all of it inside her. One memory at a time.

Home

They arrived while she was sleeping.

Dad carried her inside.

Selenga opened her eyes. Her own room. Her own ceiling.

“Home,” she whispered.

“Home,” Dad said.

He set her on the bed.

Selenga stretched out. The pillow felt familiar. The smell was familiar.

Sleep came quickly.

And in her dreams, the ocean was there. Waves. And Mia waving from far away.

Morning

She woke up in the morning.

She ran to the balcony.

No ocean. Just the street. Buildings.

But the sun was there. The same sun.

“Good morning,” she said to the sun.

The sun didn't answer. But it warmed her face.

That was enough.

A Note for Parents

Returning from vacation can be difficult for children. Feeling “both sad and happy” is completely normal. Naming this feeling—calling it nostalgia—helps children understand and accept their emotions. And rediscovering the beauty of home together creates a powerful family ritual that turns the return into something special.
