The beach was empty.

Selenga walked along the sand. The sea was calm, the sky a brilliant blue.

Then she saw it.

A small red boat, tied to the shore, as if waiting for someone.

“Is this yours?” she called out. No one answered.

She walked closer. The boat was clean inside. There was a small oar. And carved into the wooden hull, a message:

*“I carry those who wish to go.”*

Selenga gazed toward the horizon. In the distance, she could see an island.

“Shall we go?” she asked the boat.

The boat rocked gently—as if saying yes.

The Island

Selenga rowed. It didn't take long—the island was near.

She stepped onto the shore.

The island was small. Trees, flowers, a waterfall.

And in the center, on a stone platform, sat a golden box.

It was locked.

Beside it lay a note:

*“Inside is happiness. But the lock opens only with the right question.”*

The Search for an Answer

Selenga studied the box. The lock had an opening—but not for a key. It was shaped like something else.

Like a word.

A single word would fit there and unlock it.

But which word?

Selenga thought hard.

“Happiness,” she said. Nothing happened.

“Love,” she tried. Still nothing.

“Money,” she said, smiling to herself. Of course not.

“Health,” she offered. No luck.

She sat down on the stone. And thought.

The Answer

The wind blew. The trees swayed.

Selenga looked around. The waterfall was there. Flowers bloomed. The sea stretched out in the distance.

She asked herself: When have I felt most happy?

Grandmother's stories. Playing with her brother. Opening a new book. The first snow. Her mother's embrace.

What did they all have in common?

They were ordinary moments. Not big or special. Small and simple.

Selenga laughed. She stood up.

“Now,” she said to the box.

She looked at the lock. With her finger, she traced the letters: N-O-W.

The lock clicked.

The box opened.

The Empty Box

Selenga looked inside.

It was empty.

For a moment, disappointment washed over her. Then she laughed.

“Of course,” she said.

An empty box. Because happiness isn't something you own. It's not a place you travel to. It lives in now.

She could hear the waterfall. Feel the sun on her skin. Hear the wind whisper through the trees.

It was now.

She returned to the boat and rowed back.

As she reached the shore, the sun was setting. Orange and pink painted the sky.

Selenga sat in the sand. She simply watched.

And she was very happy.

Questions to Ask Your Child

**Where does happiness live?** In the present moment. Not in big events, but in small ones. In what we feel right now.

**Why do we think we'll be happy in the future?** Because paying attention to now is hard. But we can learn.

A Note for Parents
