Selenga stood between two rivers.
The one on the right was fast—foamy, loud, and powerful. The one on the left was slow—calm, deep, and quiet.
And they were both very angry with each other.
“Because of you, all the fish run away,” said the fast river. “I make too much noise.”
“Because of you, nothing grows,” said the slow river. "I don't carry enough water."
Selenga sat down on a rock.
“Are you brothers?” she asked.
“Unfortunately, yes,” said the fast river.
Different Strengths
“Tell me,” Selenga said to the fast river. “What do you do?”
“I wear away rocks. I carve paths. I break through obstacles.”
“And you?” she asked the slow river.
“I soak into the soil. I feed the roots. I fill the ponds.”
Selenga thought for a moment.
“You wear away the rocks,” she said to the fast one. “But where do those worn rocks go?”
The fast river looked confused. “Downstream. They pile up.”
“And what does that pile become?”
The fast river fell silent.
The slow river answered: “The pile becomes soil. I soak that soil with water. Plants grow.”
Silence fell over them.
Together
“Do you see?” said Selenga. "You're weak apart. You're strong together."
“Strong together?” asked the fast river. "We're so different."
"That's exactly why you're strong together. If you were the same, you'd just be two fast rivers or two slow rivers. But together, you both break rocks and water the soil."
The rivers looked at each other.
For a long time.
“I never thought about it that way,” said the slow river.
“Neither did I,” said the fast river. “I always saw his differences as a problem.”
Coming Together
From that day on, the two rivers flowed in the same riverbed. Sometimes fast, sometimes slow.
And where they joined together, the most beautiful valley formed. Flowers, trees, and birds everywhere.
Villagers came by and wondered, “How did this place become so beautiful?”
Selenga smiled. “Two brothers finally understood each other.”
