They were home.

Suitcases opened. Dirty laundry went into the basket. Souvenirs found their place on shelves.

That evening, Dad opened the computer.

“Should we look at the photos?”

Vacation on Screen

The photos appeared.

First: The beach. Sunshine. Selenga sitting in the sand. Her hair was messy.

“Is that me?” asked Selenga.

"That's you."

“My hair looks so messy.”

“You look beautiful.”

Next: A boat. Seagulls. Dad laughing.

“That seagull is eating bread,” said Selenga. “I threw it.”

“I remember.”

Every Photo Tells Something

More photos scrolled by.

A sunset. Ice cream. A sandcastle—before the waves knocked it down.

“Wait,” said Selenga. “That was our sandcastle.”

“The wave destroyed it.”

"I know. But in the photo, it's still there."

In the photo, the castle stood tall. Strong. Beautiful.

“The photo is stronger than the wave,” said Selenga.

“What do you mean?”

"The wave knocked down the castle. But the photo didn't let it disappear."

The Best Photo

The photos ended.

“Which one is your favorite?” asked Dad.

Selenga thought for a moment.

“That one,” she said.

On the screen: a photo from inside the car. Selenga was sleeping. Her head rested on Dad's shoulder. Dad was looking at the road.

“This one?” said Mom. "You're asleep in it."

“Yes.”

“Why this one?”

Selenga looked at the photo.

"Because I'm sleeping. But Dad is there. Even when I'm asleep, I'm safe. And you can see that in the photo."

Dad looked at the photo.

He said nothing.

“Did I take this one?” asked Mom.

“I did,” said Dad quietly. “At a red light.”

Mom looked.

"It's beautiful."

“The best one,” said Selenga.

Framed

The next day, Selenga asked: “Can we print this photo?”

“Why?”

“I want to hang it in my room.”

They printed it. Put it in a small frame.

Selenga hung it above her bed.

Every night before sleep, she looked at it.

In the car. On his shoulder. Safe.

Every night, she said goodnight to the photo.

A Note for Parents

The most treasured vacation photos are often the candid ones—unposed, unexpected moments. Look through photos with your child and ask them to choose their favorite. Their answer might surprise you and reveal what matters most to them.
