The Key Card

Selenga received the key card. It was small and plastic, with a number printed on it.

“213,” she read aloud. "That's our room."

They stepped into the elevator and rode up to the second floor. When the doors opened, Selenga found their room and slid the card into the lock. Click. The door swung open.

Exploring the Room

Inside, everything looked new and interesting. Two large beds with white covers stood against the walls. Four fluffy pillows were piled high on each one.

Selenga ran straight to the window. Beyond the glass stretched the sea, painted orange by the setting sun.

“Mom! I can see the ocean!” she called out.

"That's why we chose this room," her mother replied.

Next, Selenga explored the bathroom. Tiny bottles of shampoo and soap sat on the shelf.

“Why are these so small?” she asked.

“Hotels always have miniature toiletries,” her mother explained.

"They're teeny tiny,“ Selenga giggled, holding one in her palm. ”Mine at home are much bigger."

The Unfamiliar Bed

When bedtime came, Selenga climbed under the covers. The mattress felt different from her bed at home—either firmer or softer, she couldn't quite decide. The pillow smelled different too. She stared up at the ceiling, which definitely wasn't her ceiling.

“Mom?” she whispered.

“Yes, sweetie?”

"This doesn't feel like home."

"No, it's a hotel," her mother said gently.

“It feels a little strange.”

Her mother came over and stroked her hair softly.

“Listen,” she said. "I'm here. Dad is here. You're here. We're all together."

Selenga thought about this for a moment.

"So no matter where we are, as long as we're together, that's home?"

“Exactly. Home is us.”

Selenga looked at the unfamiliar ceiling again. But her mother was beside her, and her father was nearby. The strange feeling melted away.

Morning Light

When Selenga woke the next morning, sunlight streamed through the curtains. She hurried to the window.

The sea was still there, but now it looked different. Instead of orange, it shimmered silver in the morning sun, with waves catching the light like tiny mirrors.

“Good morning, ocean,” Selenga whispered.

A wave rolled in and foamed against the shore.

Selenga smiled. “You said good morning back!”

A Note for Parents

Hotel stays can be both exciting and slightly unsettling for young children. New environments, unfamiliar beds, and different routines can trigger feelings of displacement. This story offers a perfect opportunity to discuss what “home” really means. Rather than a place, home is the feeling of being safe and loved with the people who matter most. Use this moment to reassure your child that home travels with you wherever your family goes together.
