Experiment 1: The Density Tower
What You'll Need: Clear glass, honey, cooking oil, water, food coloring, rubbing alcohol
How to Build It:
- Pour honey into the glass first—it sinks to the bottom
- Add colored water carefully—it floats in the middle
- Pour cooking oil—it sits on top
- Add rubbing alcohol—it rises to the very top
Why It Works: Each liquid has a different density. Heavier liquids sink, lighter ones float. This creates beautiful colored layers that won't mix!
Experiment 2: Surface Tension Magic
What You'll Need: Bowl of water, ground pepper, dish soap
Steps:
- Sprinkle ground pepper across the water's surface—it stays on top
- Dip your finger in water—the pepper doesn't move
- Rub dish soap on your finger
- Dip it in again—watch the pepper scatter instantly!
The Science: Water molecules hold hands tightly, creating an invisible "skin" on the surface. Soap breaks this bond, causing the pepper to rush away. This is why water striders can walk on water!
Experiment 3: Rainbow Capillary Action
What You'll Need: 4 clear cups, food coloring (red and yellow), paper towels
Setup: Arrange cups in a line: red water, empty, yellow water, empty. Fold paper towels and create bridges between cups.
What Happens: Water travels through the paper towel "bridges" and mixes colors. Within an hour, the empty cups fill with new colors—the middle cup turns orange!
Why? Capillary action makes water climb through tiny paper fibers, carrying color with it.
Experiment 4: Sink or Float?
What You'll Need: Large bowl of water, various objects (apple, orange, rock, wood, plastic, metal)
The Challenge:
- Predict which items sink and which float

The Surprise: Whole oranges float, but peeled ones sink! The bumpy skin traps air pockets, making the fruit buoyant.

Experiment 6: Water Balloon Physics
What You'll Need: Balloon, water
Try This:
- Fill a balloon with water
- Toss it gently—watch it change shape
- Throw it harder—does it pop immediately?

The Physics: Water can't be compressed. When you squeeze the balloon, the pressure spreads to the sides instead of squeezing the water smaller.
Keep a Science Journal
For each experiment, write down:

- What I Observed: What actually happened?
- Why It Happened: The science behind it

Troubleshooting
Layers in Experiment 1 are mixing? You poured too fast. Try again slowly, pouring each liquid over the back of a spoon.
Colors didn't travel in Experiment 3? Your paper towel bridge might be too short or the cups too shallow. Use longer towels and taller cups.
Tips for Parents
Water experiments get messy—that's part of the fun! Wear aprons and use a plastic tablecloth. Getting wet is part of learning. These hands-on activities build curiosity and teach the scientific method in ways worksheets never can.
