Selenga sat down in the sand.

She grabbed her bucket. She grabbed her shovel.

Today, she would build a castle.

Building Time

First, she filled the bucket with sand and packed it down tight. She flipped it over and lifted it up.

A tower! A perfect tower.

She made another one next to it. She drew a path between them. She dug a moat all around—a deep, protective moat.

“This castle,” said Selenga proudly, “is really beautiful.”

Her dad walked over. “Are you an engineer now?”

“I am,” said Selenga. “Look—towers, a moat, and a courtyard inside.”

"Who's the ruler?"

Selenga thought for a moment. “Me.”

The Wave

Selenga was reinforcing her moats when she spotted it.

A big wave. Coming closer.

She ran in front of the castle. “No! Stop!”

The wave came anyway.

It took everything.

No towers. No paths. No moat.

Just flat sand.

The Tears

Selenga cried.

Her dad came over and sat beside her.

“I worked so hard,” said Selenga.

“I know you did.”

"And it's gone."

“It is.”

“Why did you let that happen?”

Her dad smiled. "I can't stop the waves, sweetheart."

“Then why did I build it here?”

“Because building it here was wonderful.”

Selenga looked at her dad. "But it's gone."

“Yes. But it existed. It was beautiful. And you made it.”

Starting Over

Selenga looked at the sand.

It was smooth. It was clean. Like the castle had never been there at all.

But there was nothing stopping her from beginning again.

She picked up her bucket and started filling it.

“Are you building again?” asked her dad.

“I am.”

“The wave will knock it down again.”

“I know.”

“So why?”

Selenga flipped her bucket over and lifted it. Another tower appeared.

"Because it's beautiful."

Her dad laughed and sat down beside her. He picked up the shovel.

“Can I help?”

“Yes.”

The Bigger Castle

This time, they built together.

Bigger. Stronger. Canals. Towers. A bridge.

The wave came.

It knocked it down again.

They both looked at the flattened sand. Then they laughed.

“Again?” asked her dad.

“Again,” said Selenga.

A Note for Parents

Destruction teaches us something important. After reading this story with your child, head to the beach and build sandcastles together—then let the waves wash them away. Watch your child discover that the real magic isn't in what lasts forever. It's in the building, the trying, and the courage to start again.
