Autumn had come.

The trees had turned brilliant colors, and their leaves were falling all around.

But high on the tallest branch of the great plane tree in Selenga's garden, one leaf still held on.

All alone.

Selenga watched. The leaf trembled in the wind but wouldn't let go.

"Why won't you fall?" she asked.

"I don't want to," whispered the leaf.

The Last Leaf

“Why not?”

"Because all the others are gone. I'm the only one left. If I fall, everything will end."

“What will end?”

"Everything. The tree won't have leaves anymore. There will be no sun. No color."

Selenga looked around. The tree was indeed bare except for this single leaf.

“Have you ever lived through winter?” she asked gently.

“No. I was born this year. This is my first autumn.”

"So you don't know what comes next."

"I don't. And it frightens me."

The Cycle

Selenga sat down at the base of the tree.

“Let me tell you something,” she said. “Last winter, I sat right here. The tree was completely bare. The branches were black, and the ground was frozen.”

“Did it die?”

“No, it slept. And when spring came—one morning I woke up and looked—tiny green shoots had appeared. Little buds. Then they grew. Then you became who you are.”

The leaf fell silent.

“Me? You saw me?”

“Not you exactly. But leaves like you. They all went through the same cycle.”

“And they fell.”

“And they transformed. They became part of the soil. They fed the tree. And in spring, new leaves grew.”

Letting Go

"So if I fall, I won't disappear," the leaf said slowly.

"You'll transform."

“Is there a difference?”

“A very big one. Disappearing is the end. Transforming is continuing.”

The leaf trembled. The wind blew stronger.

"I'm scared."

"I know. But look—the wind always comes. Each day it grows stronger. And one day, you'll be ready."

Selenga watched. The leaf quivered.

“Will you stay here?”

"I'll be here."

The leaf held on for one more moment.

Then it let go.

It spiraled down slowly, turning as it fell. Red, gold, brown—it danced through the air.

And it landed gently on the earth.

Selenga bent down and picked it up. She held it in her palm.

“Safe travels,” she whispered.

The wind answered.

Questions Parents Ask

**What is death?** There's no single answer to this question. But in nature, nothing truly disappears—it transforms. A leaf becomes soil, and soil becomes new life.

**Why is letting go so hard?** Because letting go means facing the unknown. We don't know what comes next. But often, something new begins.

A Note for Parents

This is a gentle story about death, loss, and nature's cycles. It's especially helpful for families who've experienced the loss of a grandparent or older relative. After reading, try asking: “Where do you think the leaf went?” This opens a conversation about transformation and continuity that children find comforting.
